Despite dubious scholarship, Charles Murray was invited to give a presentation on campus regarding his latest book Coming Apart. His views regarding the intelligence and society of black Americans are offensive.
The invitation of Charles Murray was defended as a stand for free speech. Student and faculty backlash eventually resulted in the invitation of sociology Prof. Agustín Fuentes to provide an academic rebuttal during the event.
We Stand For chose to use its own free speech to assemble outside the event and protest the morality of inviting Murray. His views on women and students of color echo those that have been used to justify their oppression. The systemic effects of his views were highlighted by our signs and chants at the protest.
